On average, the salary for a family medicine doctor is $1.9 million, according to a report released Tuesday by the American College of Family Physicians.
But even as family doctors continue to rake in millions, the average salary has risen since the recession.
“The average annual salary for family medicine doctors has grown over the past decade, to $1,942,000,” the report states.
The report is based on the average salaries of 2,300 family medicine physicians in the U.S. in 2017, which is up from 2,010 in 2016.
It notes that there are now nearly 3,000 family medicine physician positions in the country.
“These numbers reflect the rising number of physicians working in family medicine and the fact that the practice of family medicine is growing,” said Dr. Joseph Hallett, the study’s co-author and professor of medicine and public health at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
“It’s a remarkable rise, and it reflects a growing number of doctors working in the specialty.”
The top-paying positions include: Dr. Robert Loehrke, MD, associate professor of family practice at Yale School of Medicine, earned $1 billion in 2017.
He is the most successful family medicine practicing physician in the world, earning more than $2 million annually.
Loehke also heads the Yale Medicine and Health Sciences Center, which was the No. 1 specialty in the United States in 2016 and 2017.
The center includes 10 departments and three centers.
Luehrke’s compensation topped out at $1 in 2014, but the average annual compensation jumped from $1 to $2.2 million.
Dr, Thomas Hines, MD earned $2 billion in 2016, and his annual salary jumped from about $400,000 to more than a million.
The medical director of the UMass Medical Center in Boston, Hines also heads a center that includes several specialty clinics, including a pediatric intensive care unit.
Hines is also the chairman of the American Academy of Family Medicine.
In addition to the top earners, the report includes several others who have made more than their share of the $1-million salary pie.
Thomas Gorman, MD and Robert Ries, MD also earned more than 1 million and $1-$1.5 million respectively.
They are also among the top ten family medicine practitioners.
The report also includes the top 10,000-plus doctors and their average annual salaries.
In the top 1 percent of physicians, the median annual salary rose to $3.1 million in 2017 from $2,964,000 in 2016; the top 5 percent saw their median salary increase from $3,096,000 last year to $4.3 million.
